Nanchang Hangkong University (NCHU) is situated in Nanchang, a city steeped in history and culture and which is also the capital city of Jiangxi Province of the People’s Republic of China. Though the focus of teaching in this university is on engineering, lessons are also imparted in various other disciplines that include science, humanities, management, economics, law and education.
TEACHERS
The team of faculty members at NCHU consists of over 2000 people. Among them, over 1200 are permanent teachers and 170 are fulltime professors and over 330 are associate professors. Additionally this prestigious university boasts of 5 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) as its faculty members.
STUDENTS
Currently a total of 22,000 registered students are undergoing their studies at the Nanchang Hangkong University. These students include undergraduates, postgraduates and some students pursuing vocational courses.
COURSES OFFERED
NCHU offers a wide range of programs to students through 21 schools. Among these programs, 58 are undergraduate disciplines, 5 are first grade and second grade disciplines at the masters level. The university also houses a number of important laboratories in various disciplines. Among these, eight are provincial level key laboratories (research centers), two key laboratories of China Aviation Technology, one key laboratory of national Defense, one key laboratory established by Ministry of Education, one key National Defense discipline, and 10 Provincial level key disciplines with separate key disciplines at the National Defense level.
COOPERATIVE RELATIONS WITH FOREIGN COUNTRIES
The university has mutual exchange programs and cooperative relationships with countries like Korea, Japan, United States, Canada, Australia, France, Finland and Germany. At present the number of foreign students studying at the university is over one hundred and thirty. These students are from eighteen countries, namely, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, Ghana, Zambia, Botswana, Djibouti, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Angola, Canada, Zimbabwe, and Turkmenistan. Moreover for the short-term language and culture program, every year the Nanchang Hangkong University enrolls a certain number of South Korean and European students.
SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED
In 2011, the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China designated NCHU to admit International students under Chinese Government Scholarships Program. In order to attract overseas students to NCHU, the university as well as the Jiangxi Provincial Government has set up Nanchang Hangkong University Scholarship and Jiangxi Provincial Government Scholarship respectively for International Students.
PROGRAMS TAUGHT IN ENGLISH MEDIUM
NCHU has started Aeronautical Engineering and Business Administration programs at the bachelor’s degree level in English medium for foreign students. Again in 2013, the University initiated Post Graduate Degree Programs in English medium in Aeronautical engineering, Mechanical engineering, Software Engineering, Technology of Internet of Things, Computer Science and Technology, Control science and Engineering and Information and communication engineering.
Nanchang is a prefecture-level city situated in the Jiangxi province of the People’s Republic of China. With an area covering 7,372 sq. km, this metropolitan center is also a picture of scenic beauty. It is bounded by the Jiuling Mountains on the western side and the Poyang Lake on the eastern side. The city is located on the right bank of the river Gan and to the south of the Yangtze River.
CLIMATE
Nanchang experiences humid sub-tropical climate with short and cool winters and long and humid summers. The spring season is gloomy and the city experiences rains more than 220 mm every month from April to June. On the other hand during the autumn season the city experiences the lowest levels of rainfall of the whole year.
DEMOGRAPHY
Nanchang is inhabited by thirty seven ethnic groups with the total population amounting to 5,042,865, according to the 2010 population census.
AGRICULTURE
In the whole of the Jiangxi province, Nanchang is the hub for agricultural production. The main agricultural produce of the region are rice and oranges.
INDUSTRY
The main industrial activities of the city are electro-mechanics, metallurgy, aircraft manufacturing, automobile manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, textile, chemical engineering and traditional Chinese medicine, As part of the Jiangling Motor joint venture, the Ford Transit van is being assembled at the assembling plant of the Ford Motor Company.
ECONOMY
The gross domestic product of Nanchang in 2008 was valued at 166 billion Yuan which is equivalent to 24.3 billion USD. The per capita GDP was 36, 105 Yuan, equivalent to 5,285 USD. On the other hand, the total financial revenue accrued was 23 billion Yuan while the total value of imports and exports was 3.4 billion USD.
SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL ZONES
There are three national level industrial zones in Nanchang. They are the Nanchang Export Processing Zone, Nanchang National High-tech Industrial Development Zone, and the Nanchang Economic and Technological Development Zone. Besides these there are also two Provincial level development zones. They are the Jiangxi Sanghai Economic and Technological Development Zone and the Nanchang Yingxiong Economic and Technological Development Zone. The Honggutan New District in the city is regarded as a Special economic district.
RAIL TRANSPORT
The Nanchang city is well connected by the railways and it is a major rail hub for southeastern China. The CRH (China Railway High-speed) service connects the city of Nanchang with the cities of Hangzhou, Changsha and Shanghai. The primary passenger rail stations of the city are the Nanchang Railway Station and the Nanchang West Railway Stations.
ROADWAYS
Nanchang has a well developed network of roads with a number of national highways crisscrossing the city.
AIRWAYS
The main international airport is Nanchang Changbei International Airport (KHN) built in 1996 and it is the only airport in Jiangxi Province which has an international air route.
WATERWAYS
With a number of water bodies like the rivers Gan and Fu and the , Qingshan and the Aixi Lakes in its vicinity, Nanchang’s water routes play a major role in trade and shipping .Nanchang Port happens to be the biggest port on the Gan River and passenger ships and boats ply commuters to destinations like the Poyang Lake, Stone Bell Hill, Poyang Lake Bird Protection Area and Dagu Hill.
