Tianjin Medical University (TMU)

Tianjin Medical University (TMU) is a public university located on 22 Qixiangtai Road, at Tianjin, in Hebei province of the People’s Republic of China. It was the first medical institution in the country to be approved by the Chinese State Council. As part of the Project 211 of the government, the university receives substantial grants from Central Government of China for its Research and development. The university also finds a pride of place in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED). ACHIEVEMENTS
Tianjin Medical University has earned a name for itself in the country in the field of modern research on cancer. It houses Asia’s biggest Oncology Research and treatment centre. TMU has established cooperative relations with over 50 best medical universities in the world in its pursuit for excellence in Modern Medicine. Tianjin Medical College plays host to a number of visiting faculties from the world’s best Medical Universities who come for teaching and Collaborative Research. The first Medical University to be established for modern Medicine in China, it runs eight specialized departments of medicine besides the Department of Endocrinology, the Department of Nuclear Medicine and the Department of Oncology. Moreover, there are six hospitals attached to the university and more than 30 teaching hospitals.

TRACING THE ROOTS
TMU came into being in 1951 with the approval of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. In December 1993, the Tianjin Medical College and the Tianjin Second Medical College were amalgamated with the Tianjin Medical University after it was approved by the State Education Council. Earlier on in 1981, the university was authorized by the Academic Degree Committee of State Council to award Bachelor’s , Master’s and Doctorate Degrees and in 1988, was permitted to set up seven-year medical program.

SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED
TMU offers a wide array of scholarships to aspiring students. These are Chen Lude Nursing Scholarship, Wang Kechang Scholarship, People Scholarship, Science and Engineering Scholarship, Tianjin Takeda Scholarship, Jianxuyunzhu Medical Scholarship and Zhu Xianyi Scholarships.

STAFF AND STUDENTS
A total of 7493 staff members including 6610 professionals are serving at the university. Among them 1468 professionals hold senior positions. The total strength of students is 8515, which includes 1940 post graduate students, among whom 347 are from the medical stream, 1593 master’s degree students, 5127 undergraduates and 494 junior-college students. Over 954 international students are also undergoing their studies in the university.

LIBRARY
TMU boasts of a state-of-the-art library which has been designated as the Central Library by the Ministry of Health of China. The library has an impressive collection of 510 thousand volumes and different kinds of journals which number almost 3000. In order to facilitate long distance medical education, sending email, document transit, etc, the library has been equipped with computer network including Internet.
