A busy seaport, Ningbo (宁波市) is a busy commercial urban hub in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). This north-eastern sub-provincial municipality is spread over an area of 2,000/sq mi (770/km2) in the Zhejiang province.
NOMENCLATURE
The Chinese word ‘Ningbo’ is a compound form of two terms “ning’ and ‘bo’. ‘Ning’ (寧 or 宁) connotes “serene/tranquil”, whereas the other Chinese term ‘bo’ means (波) “waves”. Therefore, the English transcription of the term ‘Ningbo’ is ‘Serene Waves’/ ‘Tranquil Waves’.
Often the city’s name is also abbreviated to 甬 (Yǒng), after 甬山 (the Yong Hill) — a major coastal hill near Ningbo. There is also the Yong River meandering through the metropolis.
The ellipsis ‘Ning’ is popularly used for Nanjing.
Earlier referred to as ‘Ningpo’, the modern metropolis of Ningbo is variously put in black and white. For instance, it is written as Níngbō in pinyin; (the term is pronounced thus in the Ningbo dialect Nyin-poh/Nyin-pou; as nying平po平 in Wu; as 宁波 in Chinese; and as 寧波 in Traditional Chinese.
At one point of time, Ningbo was also known as 明州 (Míngzhōu). The term 明 (Ming) points to two lakes located within the wall of the metropolis —月湖 (the Moon Lake) and 日湖 (the Sun Lake). Today, only the Moon Lake is extant.
POLITICAL STATUS
The Ningbo Municipality enjoys a Sub-Provincial Administrative Status. The Chinese Government also allows the town’s management to draw up its very own state-planning blueprint.
ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS
Ningbo has 11 County-level divisions and 148 Township divisions.
LOCATION & ELEVATION
Ningbo is located between coordinates 29°52′N and 121°33′E. This Chinese cultural hub is situated at an elevation of 488 ft (150 m) above the sea level.
BOUNDARIES
The Hangzhou Bay is to the north of this ancient city while the East China Sea is to the east. Ningbo shares its boundaries with Shaoxing in the west and with Taizhou in the south. There is a narrow water strip between this town and Zhoushan.
POPULATION
Ningbo is presently home to a mixed population of 7,605,689 (2010 Census). The metro population has been estimated at 3,491,597 whereas that of the urban area spread over six districts is 3,491,597.
POPULATION DENSITY
The density of population is 2,000/sq mi (770/km2).
TRACING THE ROOTS
The roots of Ningbo have been traced to 4800 BC. That was the flourishing time of the extremely rich Hemudu culture. This town was a major mercantile hub on the famed Silk Road some 2000 years back. Then it also developed as a key seaport together with Guangzhou and Yangzhou during the heydays of the Tang Dynasty. Next, it assumed the most significant role as a harbor drawing substantial foreign exchange to the royal exchequer of the Song Dynasty.
