Kunming Medical University, previously known as Kunming Medical College, is a medical school located in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, China.
Founded in 1933, Kunming Medical University (KMU) is the largest specialized medical university in Yunnan and leads the way in medical education, scientific research, medical services and social service. Kunming Medical University now consists of 17 schools and offers 19 undergraduate programs, 36 graduate programs, and 12 doctoral programs. In September 2013, there are over 12,553 students, of which 2,358 graduate students. There are also 360 international students from 20 countries. Among them, there are 278 Degree-Seeking students.Kunming Medical University has made remarkable achievements in the area of international exchange and cooperation. It has launched inter-institutional academic partnerships and exchange programs with more than 100 medical schools and institutions in more than 40 countries worldwide, such as France, the U.S.A, Sweden, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. It also conferred the titles of honorary professor and guest professor to more than 60 famouse foreign scholars. Since 1998, KMU has recruited and trained graduate students, undergraduate students, advanced medical students and Chinese language students from 29 countries and regions. Donglu University initiated specialized program in medicine, which was the origin of today’s medical education at the Kunming Medical University (KMU). In 1937, with the development of the program, the School of Medicine was established and affiliated to the Yunnan University that was former Donglu University. In 1956, the School became an independent medical school and was named with Kunming Medical College, and in 1993 it was listed as one of the key higher institutions in the Yunnan province. In 2012, after the evaluation of the Ministry of Education of China, the college was updated to the university level and was renamed with Kunming Medical University. Presently, Kunming Medical University has become the largest specialized medical university in Yunnan province.
Campus, Organization, Staff
The university campus occupies 125.4 hectares. It has about 15,000 students, of which more than 1,400 are graduate students. The University has 6,000 staff, and over 1,150 are professors and associate professors.
The KMU has 13 schools, offering 15 Bachelor’s Degree programs, 34 Master’s Degree programs, and 1 Doctor’s Degree program. It has 5 research institutes, 9 affiliated hospitals, 9 teaching hospitals, 39 practice hospitals, 9 forensic medicine sites, 6 preventive medicine practice sites, 4 pharmaceutical practice sites, and 2 optical practice sites. All of this provides KMU students a stable studying and practicing environment.
With a collection of nearly 100,000 books, the university library has been designated as Yunnan’s Central Sharing Library Network of National Literature. It is also a First-class Repository for China’s Medical and Academic Literature. KMU is a National Clinical Medicine Trial Center, and Yunnan Provincial Expert Testimony Center.
The 9 affiliated hospitals of Kunming Medical University have over 9,800 patient beds. Seven of the Affiliated Hospitals are accredited as Level-A Tertiary General Hospitals of China. The First Affiliated Hospital has over 3,000 outpatients per day and is the largest general hospital in the province. The Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University is among the “100 best general hospitals of China” and is the center for both human organ transplant and burn treatment in Yunnan. The Third Affiliated Hospital is the largest specialized cancer hospital in the province and houses three provincial cancer research centers. The Affiliated Stomatology Hospital has over 100 dental chairs and uses the most advanced technology available. It is the largest specialized Stomatology Hospital in Yunnan.
Yunnan boasts abundant natural resources with that, KMU is carrying on extensive scientific research on Yunnan’s commonly encountered, endemic and frequently encountered diseases, and constantly uses the most advanced technologies for diagnosis and treatment. KMU is involved in several phases of scientific research. This includes basic research, application research and developmental research, involving multiple subjects and multiple specialties. KMU is responsible for large numbers of national and provincial key scientific projects and international cooperation programs. Since 2004, there have been over 800 scientific research won awards on the national and provincial levels, as well as national invention awards, national scientific technology conference awards, and many others. KMU is a leader in the provincial medicine and health field.

Kunming is the capital and largest city in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. Known as Yunnan-Fu until the 1920s, today it is a prefecture-level city and the political, economic, communications and cultural centre of the province as well as the seat of the provincial government. The city is also home to several universities, museums, galleries and other important economic, cultural, and educational institutions. The headquarters of many of Yunnan’s large businesses are in Kunming as well. It was important during World War II as a Chinese military center, American air base, and transport terminus for the Burma Road. Located in the middle of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Kunming is located at an altitude of 1,900 metres (6,234 feet) above sea level and at a latitude just north of the Tropic of Cancer. It covers an area of 21,473 square kilometres (8,291 sq mi) and its urban area covers 2,622 square kilometres (1,012 sq mi). Kunming has population of 6,432,212, including 3,583,429 in the built-up area made up of 4 urban and 1 suburban districts, and is located at the northern edge of the large Lake Dian, surrounded by temples and lake-and-limestone hill landscapes.
Kunming consists of an old, previously walled city, a modern commercial district, residential and university areas. The city has an astronomical observatory, and its institutions of higher learning include Yunnan University, Yunnan Normal University and a medical college. On the outskirts is a famed bronze temple, dating from the Ming dynasty.
Its economic importance derives from its geographical position. Positioned near the border with Southeastern Asian countries, serving as a transportation hub in Southwest China, linking by rail to Vietnam and by road to Burma

Tourism
Kunming attracts domestic and foreign tourists all year round. At the center of Yunnan and as its capital, Kunming is also a transport hub for tourists heading to other parts of Yunnan such as Dali, Lijiang and Shangrila.
As of 2007, over 24 million domestic tourists visited Kunming, with 800,000 foreign tourists visiting annually. Kunming’s total revenue from tourism in 2007 was 16.8 billion yuan, an increase of 8.0 percent over 2006.
In 2003, this city was elected among the top 10 best summer resort cities around the world and it was ranked as China’s top summer resort city.
Kunming hosts the China International Travel Mart every two years.
Conference and exhibition venues in Kunming include the Kunming International Convention and Exhibition Center and the Yunnan Provincial Science and Technology Hall.

Airlines
The now defunct Yunnan Airlines was headquartered in Kunming until it was acquired by China Eastern Airlines. China Southwest Airlines used to operate routes to and from Kunming, until it was merged with Air China.
Other than China Eastern and Air China, Kunming Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Dragonair, JAL, Malaysia Airlines (MAS), Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines and Thai Airways International are the other main airlines that operate out of Kunming (see also Kunming Wujiaba International Airport).
Highway
China National Highways 108, 213 and 320 intersect in Kunming. Highways link Kunming to Thailand, Vietnam and Laos, and provide Yunnan province access to seaports of Southeast Asia
Rail
Kunming is the main rail hub of Yunnan province. The Chengdu-Kunming Railway from Sichuan, Shanghai-Kunming Railway from Guizhou, and Nanning-Kunming Railway from Guangxi converge in Kunming from the north, northeast and east.
