Harbin Medical University (HMU) is a public university situated in Harbin, often called the Paris of the East, in the Heilongjiang province, of the People’s Republic of China. The HMU campus spread across an area of 2.36 million square metres, is characterized by ancient style buildings.
TRACING THE ROOTS
Founded way back in 1926, this prestigious university is a result of the merger of the former
Harbin Medical University (earlier known as Harbin Special Medical School founded by Dr. Wu Liande, a medical pioneer in China) and former 1st and 2nd branch schools of China Medical University in Xingshan (earlier known as the China Red Army Health School founded in Ruijin, Jiangxi, in 1931). Guided by the spirit of “loving the motherland wholeheartedly and succeeding by self-made efforts” propounded by Dr. Wu Liande, HMU has , within the 80 years of its existence, become one of the top medical schools in China. The university is included in the prestigious “Project 211” and has now become a national centre for scientific research and development of teaching talents.

HMU is a fulltime member of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), Asian Medical Education Association (AMEA) and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
INSTITUTIONS AFFILIATED TO HMU
The institutions affiliated to the Harbin Medical University include the School of Health Administration, School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Adult Education (School of Continuing Education),
School of Nursing, School of Dentistry, School of Public Health, School of Pharmacy, Department of Bioinformatics, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Graduate School, five medical schools (affiliated hospitals), and Daqing Campus. A number of organizations are also based in HMU. These include National Research Center for Clinical Trial of New Drugs, Center for Endemic Disease Control of CDC, Russian Language Training Center of the Ministry of Health, Heilongjiang Branch of China Medical Academy and Heilongjiang Provincial Medical Academy.
FACULTY MEMBERS
This prestigious university boasts of an impressive list of faculty members, numbering over 10,000, who have made a mark in their respective fields. One among the faculty members is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and another one a Nightingale prize winner. Over 70 faculty members have been awarded various prizes including Wu Jieping Medical Research Award, Chinese Outstanding Young Teacher Award and Paul Jassen Award in Pharmacy.
