Southern Medical University (STMU)

Southern Medical University (STMU), formerly known as First Military Medical University, affiliated to the People’s Liberation Army of China, is a Chinese institution of higher learning, located in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong Province, China. It renamed Southern Medical University in 2004. It was founded in 1951 and became one of national key universities in 1979. Approved by the State Council and the Central Military Commission of the PLA, the university came under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province in August 2004, whereupon it was renamed Southern Medical University. Southern Medical University is ranked 2641 by 4icu world ranking and 1499 by Webometrics world ranking. The University began to enroll Chinese Government Scholarship students and international undergraduate students for English-taught clinical medicine programs in 2006. It was designated as a national key university. The University has 17 schools, 6 affiliated hospitals and 45 non-directly affiliated hospitals. It has 7 post-doctoral research stations. If offers 75 doctoral programs, 98 postgraduate programs and 49 undergraduate programs. The number of the University faculty is more than 6000. Among over 19,500 students enrolled, more than 900 are international students. The University enjoys extensive international exchanges. It has created good cooperation and exchange with more than 30 universities and research institutions in foreign countries and districts in academic exchanges activities, lad cooperation and students exchange.

Southern Medical University is located at the foothills of the picturesque Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou. The main campus, together with its south campus in the southern suburb of Guangzhou, covers an area of nearly one square kilometer. The university has been awarded the first-class garden-like university, for rows of green trees nourish and bouquets of flowers blossom on the campuses all throughout the year.

This University offers courses in Clinical Medicine at the Bachelors and Masters levels, in Western medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, economics and medical-related fields. Students are also taught English (for Chinese students) and Mandarin Chinese (for foreign students) at the basic level.

Southern Medical University is recognised by the World Health Organization and by the Medical Council of India.
