Nanchang University (NCU)

Nanchang University is a national university located in Nanchang, Jiangxi, China which was established in 1940 as National Chung-cheng University. Nanchang University is listed among the National Key Universities of China. Jiangxi is famous as the home of porcelain (china). Nanchang University boasts 12738 postgraduates of all kinds and 72466 full-time undergraduate and 3-year students (with the main campus accommodating 37858 undergraduates). Nanchang University has established stable relationship of exchange and cooperation, with more than nearly 60universities, scientific research institutions from 30 countries (regions) and also established Confucius Institute at the University of Poitiers in France and Hasanuddin University of Indonesia. Since its establishment, the school has trained a total of about 400000 talents, and made important contribution to the national and local economic construction and social progress.

Academic programs

Nanchang University hosts a graduate school and 21 undergraduate schools including colleges of Liberal Arts, Foreign Language Studies, Art and Design, Law, Economics and Management, the Sciences, Life Science, Material Science and Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Computer Engineering, Education, Medicine, and Software. These schools offer 82 undergraduate majors out of 11 academic disciplines including the liberal arts, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, science, engineering, agriculture, education, general medicine, public health， pharmacy, nursing and four clinical schools. These undergraduate programs have an enrollment of approximately 36,000 full-time students.

Although all the schools offer their own graduate programs, these programs belong to a single graduate school administratively. The NCU Graduate School offers 21 Ph.D. programs and 175 master degree programs with a graduate student body of about 6,800. In addition, NCU has two post-doctoral programs.

Nanchang University emphasizes the importance of research. In addition to research labs and centers owned by individual schools, Nanchang University owns and operates 26 national and provincial key laboratories and research centers and 56 basic training centers and professional labs.

Nanchang University has a large-scale medical school. Not only does the medical school have a strong research orientation, it has 10 attached hospitals throughout the province. These hospitals accommodate the needs for teaching and internships for students of medicine.

Campus

Nanchang University is composed of five campuses. Its main campus is located in Nanchang city, the capital city of Jiangxi Province. The main campus occupies an area of 300 hectares and is home to all of its undergraduate students, most graduate students, most research institutes and labs, and most faculty and staff.

Faculty and staff

Nanchang University employs a teaching staff of 2,337, 52% of whom are professors and associate professors. Five of them are members of the distinguished Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. A number of them have received awards for their excellence in teaching and research from various government agencies ranging from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Public Health and the Jiangxi Provincial Government.

Facilities and resources

Nanchang University has a comprehensive library network with a collection of 2.65 million books and 1338 periodicals including foreign language journals and magazines. The library boasts a collection of 61,400 rare books and 93,000 books in foreign languages. The library has over 1 million e-books and 34 subscribed databases and online libraries including EI, INSPEC, ISTP, SCI, AIP/APS, ELSEVIER, and PQDD, among others. With the abundance of e-books, subscribed online libraries, multimedia CDs and interactive videos and teaching materials, NCU students and teachers have a wide variety of resources to suit their needs for study and research.

To enhance the hands-on experience of students, Nanchang University has nine large-scale multi-purpose labs for practical training. Their areas include electronics, physics, biology, computing, networking, chemistry, engineering, mechanics, and linguistics. Nanchang University also has 47 professional research labs and 216 internship bases. To further facilitate research, NCU invested in a science and technology park which is now an incubator of 108 enterprises and research institutions on the premises. In 2004, this park was recognized as one of the “National Science and Technology Park by Universities”. NCU has found a partner in the nation’s second-largest communication equipment maker ZTE. In 2005, ZTE Software Ltd was established which is a joint venture between Nanchang University and ZTE. In 2010 NCU and Xinta Technologies Group of Singapore established a Food and Drug Technology Park dedicated to research and development.

Nanchang

Nanchang is a prefecture-level city situated in the Jiangxi province of the People’s Republic of China. With an area covering 7,372 sq. km, this metropolitan center is also a picture of scenic beauty. It is bounded by the Jiuling Mountains on the western side and the Poyang Lake on the eastern side. The city is located on the right bank of the river Gan and to the south of the Yangtze River.

CLIMATE
Nanchang experiences humid sub-tropical climate with short and cool winters and long and humid summers. The spring season is gloomy and the city experiences rains more than 220 mm every month from April to June. On the other hand during the autumn season the city experiences the lowest levels of rainfall of the whole year.

DEMOGRAPHY
Nanchang is inhabited by thirty seven ethnic groups with the total population amounting to 5,042,865, according to the 2010 population census.

AGRICULTURE
In the whole of the Jiangxi province, Nanchang is the hub for agricultural production. The main agricultural produce of the region are rice and oranges.

INDUSTRY
The main industrial activities of the city are electro-mechanics, metallurgy, aircraft manufacturing, automobile manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, textile, chemical engineering and traditional Chinese medicine, As part of the Jiangling Motor joint venture, the Ford Transit van is being assembled at the assembling plant of the Ford Motor Company.

ECONOMY
The gross domestic product of Nanchang in 2008 was valued at 166 billion Yuan which is equivalent to 24.3 billion USD. The per capita GDP was 36, 105 Yuan, equivalent to 5,285 USD. On the other hand, the total financial revenue accrued was 23 billion Yuan while the total value of imports and exports was 3.4 billion USD.

SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL ZONES
There are three national level industrial zones in Nanchang. They are the Nanchang Export Processing Zone, Nanchang National High-tech Industrial Development Zone, and the Nanchang Economic and Technological Development Zone. Besides these there are also two Provincial level development zones. They are the Jiangxi Sanghai Economic and Technological Development Zone and the Nanchang Yingxiong Economic and Technological Development Zone. The Honggutan New District in the city is regarded as a Special economic district.

RAIL TRANSPORT
The Nanchang city is well connected by the railways and it is a major rail hub for southeastern China. The CRH (China Railway High-speed) service connects the city of Nanchang with the cities of Hangzhou, Changsha and Shanghai. The primary passenger rail stations of the city are the Nanchang Railway Station and the Nanchang West Railway Stations.

ROADWAYS
Nanchang has a well developed network of roads with a number of national highways crisscrossing the city.

AIRWAYS
The main international airport is Nanchang Changbei International Airport (KHN) built in 1996 and it is the only airport in Jiangxi Province which has an international air route.

WATERWAYS
With a number of water bodies like the rivers Gan and Fu and the , Qingshan and the Aixi Lakes in its vicinity, Nanchang’s water routes play a major role in trade and shipping .Nanchang Port happens to be the biggest port on the Gan River and passenger ships and boats ply commuters to destinations like the Poyang Lake, Stone Bell Hill, Poyang Lake Bird Protection Area and Dagu Hill.
