Jiangnan University is one of the key universities of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Included in the country’s prestigious ‘Project 211’, the institution has carved a niche for itself in the three sectors of industrial design, fermentation engineering, and food science and technology.
The country’s Ministry of Science and Technology approved National Key Lab of Food Science and Technology of the University is the sole research hub of its kind in PRC. The University further runs the Industrial Microbial Resources Database Integration and Information Sharing Platform, the Scientific and Technological Novelty Search Workstation of Ministry of Education, the Food Safety Research Base of Jiangsu Province, and seven key laboratories at the ministerial or provincial level, besides 19 national, ministerial or provincial engineering research centers.
LOCATION
Administered directly by the country’s Ministry of Education, this seat of higher learning is situated at Wuxi in the Jiangsu Province of China.
NOMENCLATURE
The nomenclature of Jiangnan University (often abbreviated to JU in English) in simple Chinese is 江南大学; in traditional Chinese it is scripted as 江南大學; while in Pinyin the name of the University is written as Jiāngnán Dàxué.
TRACING THE ROOTS
The roots of Jiangnan University have been traced to the San Jiang Normal School set up at Nanjing way back in 1902. The School was subsequently renamed first as ‘National Central University’ and then as ‘Nanjing University’. It was amalgamated with the then privately-run Jiangnan University established at Wuxi by Rong Desheng — father of Rong Yiren, one of the prominent capitalist of the era known in Chinese history as ‘Republic of China’ — in 1948.
The next merger exercise occurred in 1952. It took place as a part of the revamping of the sector of higher institutions of learning soon after the founding of the People’s Republic of China: The departments of the Engineering School of Nanjing University were amalgamated with the similar departments of Jiangnan University and other seats of higher learning to constitute the new entity — Nanjing Institute of Technology (that was later renamed ‘Southeast University’).
Further restructuring happened in 1958 when the engineering department of Nanjing Institute of Technology shifted to Wuxi. It was then named ‘Wuxi College of Light Industry’. It graduated to be a university in 1995. After five years in 2001, the Jiangnan University was constituted by bringing together the Wuxi University of Light Industry, the Wuxi Education College and the Jiangnan College.
THE PRESENT CAMPUS
Situated beside the picturesque Lake Tai — a national resort — the sprawling eco-campus of Jiangnan University is spread over an area of 208 hectares. Of this, the total floor space is 1.05 million square meters.
PEDAGOGY
The University manages 17 schools and conducts 48 undergraduate courses in the following 10 disciplines, viz., agriculture, arts, economics, education, engineering, law, literature, management, medicine, and science. The institution offers master’s degree in 24 programs, and doctoral degrees in five programs.
SPECIALIZATION
Jiangnan University specializes in the following six fields and conducts advanced researches on those sectors in its four Post Doctoral Research Stations. The specialization areas are Control Science and Engineering, Food Science and Technology, Light Industry Technology and Engineering, and Textile Engineering.
Wuxi is a prefecture level city located in the southern Jiangsu province of the People’s Republic of China. The Lake Tai divides the city into the northern and southern parts. Through the northern part of the city flows the Yangtze River. The city has 9 county level divisions which includes 7 districts and 2 county-level cities and 73 township-level divisions. The township-level divisions are further subdivided into 59 towns and 24 sub districts.

The postal code of the urban centre is 214000 while those of other areas are 214200 and 214400. The area code is 510.
TRACING ITS ROOTS
The origin of Wuxi can be traced back to around 11th century when it was founded by two Zhou princes, Taibo and Zhongyong. It was then the first Chinese state to have ever been founded. Later on during the rule of successive dynasties the city retained its importance as an important centre of agriculture and industry. During the first half of the 20th century, the city came to be considered as one of the most important counties in China. After the formation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the city continued to flourish as a major centre of textile production and both light and heavy industry. In fact the city is considered, after the capital Nanjing, as the second most important city in Jiangsu Province.
CLIMATE
Wuxi’s summers are hot and humid while the winters are very cold and damp. The average annual temperature is 180C and it experiences occasional snowfall. During the monsoon season, the city receives 100 cm of rain annually.
INDUSTRY
Of late Wuxi has been named as an “investment grade city” and has two major industrial parks, namely , the Wuxi New District and the Wuxi Export Processing Zone, devoted entirely to new industries. The Suntech Power and Jetion Holdings Ltd, two major photovoltaic companies are also based in the city, making it the solar technology hub of the country. These companies are listed on overseas stock exchanges.
RAILWAYS
The Shanghai–Nanjing Intercity High-Speed Railway connects Wuxi directly with the provincial capital of Nanjing, the city of Shanghai and Suzhou. The K-series trains all stop at Wuxi.
AIRWAYS
Direct flights operate from the Wuxi Shuofang International Airport , situated 14 kilometres from the city centre, to the cities of Osaka, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Taipei, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
ROADWAYS
The Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway and the Wuxi-Yixing Expressway and the China National Highway 312 pass through the city.
STADIUMS
The Wuxi New Stadium located in the south-west part of the city has facilities for swimming, soccer and other sports.
