Guangxi Medical University (GXMU)

Guangxi Medical University is located in Nanning, Guangxi, China and is one of the oldest higher education medical institutions in China. In 2010, the university was voted one of the top 20 universities in China for medicine study founded on the 21st November, 1934, is one of the earliest 22 medical institutes in China, and one of the 8 firstly accredited medical institutes by government to enroll international students and students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese for her comprehensive qualified English curriculum recognized as one of the first approved 30 high institutes. Located in the city of Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, GXMU is one of the key prestigious universities in Guangxi and also a base for medical education, medical research as well as clinical and preventive medicine.

Programmes

There are nine 5-year undergraduate programs offered by the Guangxi Medical University, including clinical medicine, preventive medicine, stomatology, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, and seven 3-year college specialties including nursing, pharmacy, community medical care and cosmetology.

International education has shown a rapid development since the university begin to accept international students, whether for language study or enrolling in clinical medicine program, which offers the MBBS title for undergraduate students. Most international students come from Vietnam, which is located only a one-hour bus ride from Nanning. However, Vietnamese students primarily attend Chinese language classes. International students who attend the English language classes come from India, Indonesia, Nepal, and Mauritius. Lately there are also international students from Somalia, Yemen, Kenya, Nigeria, Namibia, Thailand, and Libya.

As of September 2008, the clinical medicine in English program will be altered a 6-year long programme.

Campus

The campus has a total area of 400,000 square meters, which includes teaching buildings and dormitories for Chinese students, international students and teaching staff, a library, food halls, an indoor tennis hall, a swimming pool and laboratories.

The campus is located near the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University (广西医科大学一附院), which is the largest hospital in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and the Institute of Dentistry (口腔学院)

The literal meaning of the Chinese nomenclature ‘Nanning’ is ‘peace in the south’. It is written as 南宁 in Simplified Chinese and as 南寧 in Traditional Chinese. The Zhuang nomenclature of Nanning is ‘Namzningz’ connoting ‘South Tranquility’. This sprawling urban center is also often referred to as the ‘Green City’ — thanks to its verdant tropical foliage.

INFRASTRUCTURES
Nanning hosts 54 scientific research institutes managed by the respective district administrations where they are located. There are 10 colleges and 50 trade schools providing a wide range of technical training courses. Cultural mercantile centers, bookshops and newsstands abound. Mention can be made of the 285 projecting units, more than 70 karaoke halls, 62 mass cultural organizations, 13 performing groups, and eight cinemas.

TRACING THE ROOTS
At one point of time Nanning was the principal territory of the aborigines known as the Baiyue. Subsequently, it became the main administrative unit of the Jinxing Prefecture. Still later during the reign of the Eastern Jin dynasty, it was separated from the Yulin Prefecture. In 1324 during the tenure of the Yuan dynasty, the place was rechristened as ‘Nanning Lu’ (meaning the administrative headquarter) of Yongzhou Lu (meaning: May Peace Be Maintained in the Southern Border). Nanning has always been a strategic location in the southern frontier.
During the time of the Song dynasty, Nanning became a commercial center with the other administrative areas of China setting up their respective business bureaus there. It came to be referred to as ‘Little Nanjing’ during the time of the Ming dynasty as it became the primary commodity distribution epicenter of the areas falling between the You River and the Zuo River.
Since 2005, Nanning has been playing host to the CASEAN EXPO (China-ASEAN EXPO) that is held every year. The ‘World Robotics Olympiad’ was also organized there.
