Eight top Chinese universities led by the Wenzhou University have agreed to collaborate with the Ghana Embassy in Beijing and Study in China Admission systems (SICAS) to offer 1,000 slots for Ghanaian students annually.
They have also agreed to offer 200 out of the 1,000 Ghanaian students with full scholarships to undertake various undergraduate and post graduate programmes.
This is according to the Deputy Ambassador to China, Horace Nii Ayi Ankrah.
He said the agreement was the outcome of his working visits to Wenzhou University and the head office of SICAS in Qingdao in China.
Ambassador Ankrah said the scholarships would focus on Pharmacy, Civil Engineering and Medicine in line with the Embassy’s new education policy to approach top Chinese universities to extend their ‘internationalization drive’ to Ghanaian students.
He said the embassy’s approach was an attempt to align its efforts with ‘access to education for all’ policy President John Dramani Mahama’s government launched a couple of years ago.
“However, to ensure effective and seamless alignment to this great policy of the current administration of Ghana, I have urged top Chinese universities to establish campuses in various regions of Ghana to help more Ghanaians gain access to higher education,” Mr Ankrah said.
Professor Li Xiaokun, President of the Wenzhou University, promised the Deputy Ambassador that his institution was committed to the new initiative.
Ms Zhang Lu, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SICAS, expressed satisfaction at the level of involvement of Ghana’s Embassy in Beijing and gave the assurance that the move would be successful.
