China Three Gorges University (CTGU) is located in Yichang City, Hubei province, China. The university is located at the mouth of the Xiling Gorge, one of the Three Gorges. Having been approved by the Ministry of Education, CTGU was founded in June 29, 2000, comprising the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering/Yichang and the former Hubei Sanxia College. The campus of China Three Gorges University (CTGU) occupies 200 hectares, and the total building area comprises 830,000 m2 (8,934,046 sq ft). The libraries consist of 2,000,000 volumes. CTGU is a comprehensive university established on June 29, 2000 after the merger of the University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering at Yichang, Hubei Sanxia University, and a medical college founded in 1946.
CTGU is famous for its influence in hydroelectric engineering and electrical engineering. Since 2012, CTGU have recruited over 23,299 full-time undergraduates, 2,040 postgraduate and 894 foreign students. Instituting a group of key subjects (key laboratories) at the provincial and state level, and doctoral and master programs, CTGU is becoming a rising star among thousands of Chinese University.
Moreover, the Ministry of Water Resources and the People’s Government of Hubei Province signed agreements in 2009 to build CTGU in joint effort. Beside, CTGU was awarded with “Advanced unit of opening up” by Hubei Provincial government in 2010; and was awarded with “Demonstration base of international student education”in 2014. CTGU consists of 29 colleges, 70 undergraduate programs covering nine fields including science, engineering, medicine, arts, economics, management, law, education and fine arts. By now, China Three Gorges University has become an comprehensive university with characteristic features of prominent discipline advantage, hydropower resources and great social reputation.
Colleges and Faculties
CTGU consists of 20 teaching units.
CTGU takes advantage of the location and endeavors to serve the hydroelectric industry, local economic and social development by implementing the principle of combining production, study and research. In recent 5 years, the university has undertaken and completed 1679 research items at all kinds of levels, and achieved a number of science and technology achievements, which reach the international level and first-class national level, especially in the construction a lot to the Three Gorges Project and the development of Qingjiang river.
CTGU has already established cooperative relationships with around 60 universities in about 30 foreign countries such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and so on. The cooperation extends to teaching, scientific research and student exchanges. So far, the cooperation has greatly improved scientific research and talent cultivation through international cooperation.
CTGU puts emphasis on the development of the key disciplines and key laboratories, improves its organizational structure, and eventually forms five subject groups including hydroelectric energy engineering, hazard protection and environment, information technology and control engineering, the Three Gorges culture and tourism, and life science and biological technology. Now the university endeavors to develop the education of postgraduates and to improve the level of teaching, scientific research, and administration.
Hubei is a province of the People’s Republic of China, located in the easternmost part of Central China. The name of the province means “north of the lake”, referring to its position north of Lake Dongting. The provincial capital is Wuhan, a major transportation thoroughfare and the political, cultural, and economic hub of Central China.
Hubei is officially abbreviated to “鄂” (È), an ancient name associated with the eastern part of the province since the Qin dynasty, while a popular name for Hubei is “楚” (Chǔ), after the powerful State of Chu that existed here during the Eastern Zhou dynasty. It borders Henan to the north, Anhui to the east, Jiangxi to the southeast, Hunan to the south, Chongqing to the west, and Shaanxi to the northwest. The high-profile Three Gorges Dam is located at Yichang, in the west of the province.
By the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC – 476 BC), the territory of today’s Hubei was part of the powerful State of Chu. Chu was nominally a tributary state of the Zhou dynasty, and it was itself an extension of the Chinese civilization that had emerged some centuries before in the north; but it was also culturally unique, and was a powerful state that held onto much of the middle and lower Yangtze River, with power extending northwards into the North China Plain.

During the Warring States period (475 BC – 221 BC) Chu became the major adversary of the upstart State of Qin to the northwest (in what is now Shaanxi province), which began to assert itself by outward expansionism. As wars between Qin and Chu ensued, Chu lost more and more land: first its dominance over the Sichuan Basin, then (in 278 BC) its heartland, which correspond to modern Hubei. In 223 BC Qin chased down the remnants of the Chu regime, which had fled eastwards, as part of Qin’s bid for the conquest of all China.
Culture
People in Hubei speak Mandarin dialects; most of these dialects are classified as Southwestern Mandarin dialects, a group that also encompasses the Mandarin dialects of most of southwestern China.
Perhaps the most celebrated element of Hubei cuisine is the Wuchang fish, a freshwater bream that is commonly steamed.
Types of traditional Chinese opera popular in Hubei include Hanju.
The Shennongjia area is the alleged home of the Yeren, a wild undiscovered hominid that lives in the forested hills.
The people of Hubei are given the uncomplimentary nickname “Nine Headed Birds” by other Chinese, from a mythological creature said to be very aggressive and hard to kill. “In the sky live nine-headed birds. On the earth live Hubei people.”
Wuhan is one of the major culture centers in China.
