After China bombarded the Indian market with its products, it’s now the turn of “made in China” doctors. According to recent data, China is the largest contributor of MBBS doctors in India. Data suggests that most of those aspiring to become doctors who do not get admission in India land up in China to pursue medicine. Russia federation, Ukraine and Nepal are also the next main contributors of MBBS doctors to India.
The data collated by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), which conducts computer-based Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) screening test of an Indian citizen or overseas citizens of India possessing a primary medical qualification awarded by any medical institution outside India and desiring to work in India, reveals that 11,825 students who pursued MBBS from China appeared for the screening test in 2012-2014.
During the same period, 5,950 appeared for the test from Russia federation, followed by 3,163 candidates who studied in Nepal appeared for the test.
Significantly, the NBE has also given rankings to institutes of these countries based on the performance of the candidates. In Russian federation, Yerevan State Medical University has been ranked on the top with 524 candidates appearing for the test out of which 95 passed. In China, however, Zhengzhou University attracted the maximum of 786 candidates from India.
Interestingly, countries like UK, Germany and Singapore attract very few contenders. While only one who pursued MBBS during 2012-2014 from Germany appeared for the test, the performance was dismal, with zero pass percentage. From United Kingdom, only two pursued MBBS and out of which one passed.
