Beijing Jiaotong University

One of the oldest universities of the People’s Republic of China, the Beijing Jiaotong University was established in 1896. It was earlier known as the ‘Northern Jiaotong University’.

ROOTS: The roots of the Beijing Jiaotong University have been traced to the Jiaotong University or Chiao Tung University. The Qing Government set up the Railway Management Institute under the Postal Department in September 1909. In the 1920s, the government set up the Jiaotong University by merging two technical schools in Tangsham and Shanghai. The new institution had three campuses in Tangsham, Shanghai and Beijing. The institution was rechristened Beiping Railway Management School. The campus in Beijing was given the nomenclature of National Jiaotong University, Beijing. The name of this campus was again changed to Northern Jiaotong University in 1949. The name was further changed to Beijing Jiaotong University in September, 2003. It was thus named to bring out the location of the university in the title of the institution itself. The Shanghai campus was bifurcated into Xi’an Jiaotong University and the Shanghai Jiaotong University.

INFRASTRUCTURE: There are 22 research centers and research institutes in the Unievrsity, besides 39 laboratories including the transportation system, the simulation laboratory and the transportation automation laboratory — the best of their kinds in the country. The library of the university has a rich collection of more than one million books, and more than 3000 journals (Chinese and foreign), besides several documents preserved on microfiche, audio-and-video-documents on various media formats.

FACULTY: The Beijing Jiaotong University has 2842 scientists and faculty members. Of them, 588 are associate professors, 286 full-time professors, and 10 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

STUDENTS: The total enrollment of full-time students in the University is 23,810. Of them, 7,527 are graduate students working on masters or research programs; 8,767 are engaged in other full-time programs, night-schools and correspondence programs and 500 students are from across the globe. The institution is one of the earliest universities to get the government nod to enroll foreign students. The university has been getting a positive response from overseas students. More than 3,000 students from 71 countries have enrolled themselves in the BJTU courses.

The ‘Entering China’ project: Jointly organized by the China Women and Children Development Center and the Beijing Jiaotong University, the ‘Entering China’ Project focuses on boosting international cultural and education exchanges, promotion of Chinese culture and forging tie-ups between Chinese and foreign schools. The program offers comprehensive academic services for overseas students. The University chose Studypath as a strategic technology partner in 2007 to liaise and co-ordinate with agencies and students to enroll them in the project. The project’s online service is available to the students before; during; and even after the students arrive in China.
