Profile

Beihang University

A key seat of higher learning, Beihang University, it was founded on October 25, 1952. This institution is known for carrying out extensive researches in technological advancements besides academics. The institution has carved a niche for itself in astronautical and aeronautical sector in the country. The campus of this engineering university is spread over an area of about 100 hectares in Beijing.

CONSISTENT PATRONAGE

The significance of the University can be gauged from the fact that it has been consistently getting official patronage since its inception. During the 1950s, it was counted among the maiden set of 16 key universities. It was among the foremost 15 academic and research institutions shortlisted by planners for development during the Seventh Five Year Plan period (1986 to 1990); it was again chosen among the top 14 universities to upgrade its infrastructure during the Eighth Five Year Plan period; and was among the first group of universities for further upgradation and that too at the beginning of the initiation of the Ninth Five Year Plan phase. Subsequently it was included in the maiden group of 15 universities in Project 211 and it was at the top rung in the list of universities selected in Project 985 of the People’s Republic of China (PRC)

MOTTO

The motto of Beihang University in Chinese is 德才兼备知行合一 which transcribed into English would be Ability, together with Integrity; Practice, in conformity with Truth and Moral Beliefs.

TRACING THE ROOTS

The roots of BUAA can be traced to the formation of the Beijing Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BIAA) following the 1952-merger of the aeronautical departments of eight educational institutions, namely those of the North China University, the Northwestern Engineering College, the , the Sichuan University, the Southwest Aeronautical Institute, the Tsinghua University, the Xiamen University, and the Yunnan University.

During the initial days, the faculty members and students of BUAA stayed in the campuses of Beijing Institute of Technology as well as the Tsinghua University. A new site encompassing more than 60,000m² was chosen in May, 1953. The construction work commenced at the chosen spot in June 1953. Within six months the campus was developed and the students and a section of the faculty shifted to the University’s own newly set up campus at the BaiYanZhuang Village in the Haidian District of western Beijing by October 1953. The university started functioning with the two departments of Aeroplane Engineering and Aeroplane Engine Engineering. The former offered majors in Aeroplane Design as well as Aeroplane Technology; whereas the latter had major courses in Engine Technology, and Engine Design.

The Beijing Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BIAA) was renamed as the ‘Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ in May 1988. The management of the university decided to change the English nomenclature to ‘Beihang University’ in 2002. Nonetheless, it also decided to retain the abbreviation ‘BUAA’.
