Tsinghua University

The Tsinghua University is globally regarded as a high temple of engineering and other sciences, and is often dubbed the ‘MIT of China’. Established at Beijing in 1911, the campus of the university, which is also often called THU in short, is spread over an area of 980 acres (395 hectares). Its administrative staff is 4,011 while its academic staff numbers 3,133. The number of undergraduate students is 15, 184 and that of the postgraduates is 16, 524. The university is affiliated to AEARU, APRU, and C9. The motto of Tsinghua University in English is ‘Self-discipline and Social Commitment’. Its mission is to focus on “academic excellence, the well-being of the Chinese society and to global development”. Its representative flowers are 395 hectares while its colors are white and pink. Its website is Tsinghua.edu.cn. The university has been consistently ranked by both national and international rating agencies as one of the top seats of advance learning in China. Widely recognized as a prominent research institution of the country, it is one of the nine members of the prestigious C9 League of universities of the country.

NOMENCLATURE: When it was established, this institution was known as the ‘Tsinghua College’. Since then in 1911, it has been rechristened several times. For instance, just a year after its inception, it was renamed Tsinghua School’; then to ‘National Tsinghua University three years later in 1928, i.e., three years after the foundation of the university wing of the institution in 1925.

The establishment of the Tsinghua College in Beijing on April 29, 1911, is inextricably connected with the fallout of the Boxer Rebellion and the reduction of the indemnity to the US Government by the then ruling Qing Dynasty in China. The protection cover was cut down from US $30 million to US $10 million following US Secretary of State John Hay suggesting to the Congress that the original rate was rather high. After a number of negotiations, American President Theodore Roosevelt was successful in obtaining the Congressional nod in 1909. However, a condition was also slapped on to the reduction approval, according to which the spillover fund was to be utilized as scholarship for Chinese scholars intending to study in the United States of America (USA). It was with the backup of this fund that the Ts Tsinghua College ((清華學堂; Qīnghuá Xuétáng) was set up on the site of a garden that belonged to a Chinese prince in Beijing. Thus, the newly established educational institution served as a preparatory school for the aspiring Chinese students with a dream to pursue further studies in their respective areas in the USA. The YMCA (Young Men Christian Association) recruited the faculty members for sciences for the college. The graduates of Tsinghua College got direct admission as juniors into various American schools.

The institution’s college section was set up in 1925. That very year, a research institute on Chinese Studies was also added to the College. Three years thence in 1928, the name of the institution was changed to ‘National Tsing Hua University’ (NTHU). In 1937, when World War II was in full swing, the Tsinghua University was merged with two other Chinese universities (the Nankai University and the Peking University) to constitute a new entity by the name of Changsa Temporary University in Changsa. It was subsequently rechristened ‘National Southwestern Associated University’ in Kunming of the Yunnan Province of China. After the end of the War in 1945, Tsinghua University returned to Beijing from which it continued its operations.

When the People’s Republic of China (PRC) was formed in 1949 at the end of the Chinese Civil War following the Communist Revolution, the president of Tsinghua University, Mei Yi-Qi, and a large number of its faculty members fled to Taiwan and established the National Tsing Hua Institute of Nuclear Technology there in 1955. It later came to be known as the National Tsing Hua University of Taiwan.

Largely influenced by the then Soviet system of higher education network and plan, the Chinese Government undertook an ambitious massive plan to rearrange the country’s higher education sector in 1952. It was basically meant to allow a particular university to have specialization on a definite field of study. Another watershed in the country was the Cultural Revolution of 1966 when a significant section of the Chinese students left their classrooms with many among them joining the Red Guards. The fallout was disastrous for Tsinghua University and the authorities were compelled to close it down. It was only when the Cultural Revolution ended in 1978 that the university gradually came into operation. Since 1980, the university started incorporating a multidisciplinary scheme whereby a number of schools were re-incorporated. These were (in an alphabetical order) the Academy of Arts and Design, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Life Sciences, the School of Public Policy and Management, the School of Sciences, and the Tsinghua Law School.

A good number of the students from Tsinghua University have been consistently clearing the National College Entrance Examinations with top grades. As per a report in 2008, out of 300 students 215 students scoring the top 10 in the 30 tested regions and provinces selected Tsinghua University while 21 of the 30 top scorers in each region and province chose this university. Again, a significant section of the brilliant scholars of the country are alumni of the university. The entrance to the entrance levels of the academic courses of the university are only through merit, and quite competitive.

ALUMNI: Among the alumni of Tsinghua are the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and Paramount Leader Xi Jinping. He graduated with a degree in chemical engineering in 1979. Mention can also be made of CPC General Secretary and former Paramount Leader Hu Jintao. He graduated with a degree in hydraulic engineering in 1964. Tsinghua has hosted the largest number of distinguished guest speakers than any other university of the world. The list includes Bill Clinton, Carlos Ghosn, Henry Kissinger, Henry Paulson, and Tony Blair, among others.

INFRASTRUCTURE: In 2003, Tsinghua University had 12 colleges with 48 departments; 41 research institutes; 35 research centers; besides 167 laboratories, including 15 national key laboratories. In September 2006, the Peking Union Medical College was rechristened ‘Peking Union Medical College’, Tsinghua University. Nevertheless, the Peking Union Medical College and Tsinghua University are two independent institutions.

The university offers 107 PhD programs, 139 master’s degree programs and 51 bachelor’s degree programs.

INTERNATIONAL TIEUPS: Tsinghua is the maiden Chinese university to offer a Master of Laws program in American law. It is via a cooperative venture with the Temple University Beasley School of Law. Tsinghua University is also a member of LAOTSE — an global network of principal universities in Asia and Europe. The University celebrates the Intellectual Property Summer Institute in cooperation with Franklin Pierce Law Center of Concord, New Hampshire, every year. It has its own publication department — the Tsinghua University Press.

The Schwarzman Scholars program comprising 200 selected scholars to annually work towards a one-year Master’s Degree in Public Policy, International Relations, Engineering, Economics & Business was announced in 2013. These researchers would live on the university campus at Schwarzman College, a residential college specifically built for the program. About 45% of the participants come from the U.S.A, 35% from the rest of the world while 20% from China.
