Xinjiang Medical University (XMU)

Xinjiang Medical University, formerly the Xinjiang Medical College, is a medical university in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China. It was ratified by the National Ministry of Education in 1998 and entitled by Jiang Zemin.

The curriculum places a particular emphasis on medicine, management and linguistics, with the university facilitating 25 specialties for undergraduate students and 17 specialties for academic education. Over 50,000 students have been educated at XMU[1] and in 2010, 13,100 students were enrolled at the university, with 5,405 people employed in teaching positions. XMU is situated at the base of Carp Hill in Northeast Ürümqi and consists of a campus size that is over 3 million square feet.

Since 1998, XMU has won 58 provincial and ministerial level scientific research awards. It is listed among the top colleges and universities performing scientific research in the Autonomous Region and it is the only institution in China to win the “Chinese Medical Academic Award” in four consecutive years. XMU topped the universities which were being observed by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

As of 22 July 2009, the university was one of seven such institutions in the Republic to be recognized by the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (this was in addition to recognition already granted by the Medical Council of India).

Campus

The campus has a number of buildings from the late Russian era in Xinjiang. The university campus has been completely updated and modernized and a library, canteens, hospitals and training centres are included facilities. The experimental laboratories include modern bioinformation processing systems and models.

Xinjiang Medical University is made up of four campuses and consists of 14 colleges and 2 teaching department. At present, the school sits on 1,303, 000 square meters of land and the student population on campus is over 22,660. Among them 240 are PhD students and 2,632 are Master’s Degree students. 760 are 7-year program Master’s Degree students; 7,792 students are undergraduates and 3,791 students are associate degree students. There are also 800+ international students, as well as 7,301 students studying at the School of Continuing Education. Xinjiang Medical University attaches great importance to the development of teaching staff and takes great measures in developing and strengthening them. The staff and teaching faculty is made up of more than 15,070 people, among them 914 are academic teachers and 977 are clinical teachers. There are 207 professors and 601 associated professors.

Xinjiang Medical University owns 2 key laboratories supported by provincial government and Education Ministry, 4 laboratories supported by the Xinjiang regional government, 8 key subjects managed by the Stated Administration of TCM, 11 key subjects at the regional level and 10 regional level research institutes. There are three mobile postdoctoral centers (Clinical medicine, pharmacy, and preventive medicine), 1 postdoctoral research station. There are also 27 doctoral degree programs and 53 master’s degree programs.

Moreover, Xinjiang Medical University has 6 affiliated hospitals containing 5,707 beds and 3 Non-affiliated hospitals. At present our techniques in performing liver transplants, in-vitro fertilization, lung transplants, heart transplants, kidney transplants, coronary artery bypass grafting, bone marrow transplants, PTCA (percutaneous translational coronary angioplasty) and other difficult operations are equal to international standards. There are 5 key subjects at the regional level, one key laboratory supported by provincial government and Ministry of Education, and 2 key laboratories in the fields of molecular biology and hydatid disease. There are also 10 research institutes at the regional level. Furthermore, with the support of more than 40 Hospitals for Medical Practice located all around the Xinjiang region, the Xinjiang Medical University offers medical apprenticeship in various fields with advanced research opportunities, which has been benefiting our students substantially.

In terms of international education in China Xinjiang Medical University is also recognized as one of the largest colleges. Initialised in 1992, the International Education Programme began to recruit foreign undergraduate students in a large-scale, most of who came from Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Russian, Tajikistan, United Kingdom, Sudan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Korea. Xinjiang Medical University admits 150 new overseas students every year. At present, 560 overseas students are studying for their bachelors, masters and doctorate degree at Xinjiang Medical University. Students from all countries are all warmly welcome to Xinjiang Medical University.
