Nantong University, colloquially known in Chinese as Tong da, was established in 1912. The university is located in Nantong, Jiangsu province, China. It occupies 4000 acres and have 800 thousand square meters used for school buildings. Nantong is comprehensive university constructed by Jiangsu Provincial Government and the state Ministry of Transport. It is composed of three parts, Nantong Medical College, Nantong Engineering College and Nantong Normal College and has four campuses: the new campus, Qixiu campus, Zhongxiu campus and Qidong campus. The enrollment is nearly 34 thousand full-time students, among whom 1550 are graduates and 300 are oversea students. The university has 84 undergraduate programs based on nine major disciplines, which are literature, science, engineering, medical science, education, economics, law, history and management.
Medical School of Nantong University is as old as this university. Set in 1912, it has become the largest school on campus, containing 12 teaching and research sections for Preclinical Medicine and Medical Humanities, 23 Clinical Medicine sections, 8 laboratories and 12 research institutes or centers.
The school offers 12 undergraduate programs, including 1 national key discipline, 5 provincial key disciplines and 9 provincial clinical medicine specialties. There are over 3,989 medical students including 261from foreign countries. Clinical Medicine is the key discipline both in the province and the university. It is equipped with excellent teaching facilities, qualified teachers, Provincial Public Technology Service Platform and Clinical Medical Center. There also exist 16 affiliated hospitals for clinical teaching and graduation internship as well as 52 hospitals for teaching practice.
The MBBS program (Clinical Medicine) can be taught in English for international students and it has been approved by the MOE in 2008. Since 2005, 261 international students from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Jordan, Namibia and Botswana, South Korea, Japan, Australia, Brazil i.e. have taken part in this program.
The medical school has staff team of rich experience, exquisite medical skills and high academic ability. There are 152 professors, 190 associate professors, 6 doctoral supervisors, 148 master supervisors and a large number of part-time teachers.
NTU has undertaken actively in academic exchange and cooperation with the universities and research institutes in Britain, the United States, Germany, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Portugal and other countries. A series of programs like teacher exchange, student exchange, cooperation in research and running school etc have been established and 15 full-time foreign professors are recruited in NTU.
NTU is recognized by WHO and the graduates of MBBS program are eligible to take the Medical Licensing Examinations held by the medical councils in different countries such as MCI, PMDC, USMLE, HPCSA, SCHS etc.
Nantong is a prefecture-level city in Jiangsu province, China. Located on the northern bank of the Yangtze River, near the river mouth. Nantong is a vital river port bordering Yancheng to the north, Taizhou to the west, Suzhou and Shanghai to the south across the river, and the East China Sea to the east. Its current population is 7,282,835 at the 2010 census, 1,994,708 of whom live in the built-up area made up of 3 urban districts.
The Hao River, known as the Emerald Necklace of Nantong, surrounds the city with a total length of 15 km (9.3 mi). Most city scenery lines this river.
Popular tourist sites include Langshan (“Wolf hill”), which is around 110 meters high. On top of the hill is a Buddhist temple dedicated to a Song dynasty monk. Because of the monk’s legendary powers over water demons, sailors pray to him for protection on their voyages.
The Cao Gong Zhu Memorial Temple commemorates a local hero who defended the city against Japanese pirates in 1557.
Shuihuiyuang Garden, meaning Water Garden, is unique of all Chinese classical gardens due its creation in the Hui style. It includes the tombs of several notable people, such as Luo Binwang, a famous poet of Tang Dynasty; Wen Tianxiang, the national hero of Nansong Dynasty; Zhangjian, the number one scholar of the late Qing Dynasty who was a modern industrialist and supporter of education.
Rail
The Nanjing-Qidong (Ningqi) and Xinyi-Changxing (Xinchang) Railways intersect at Hai’an in the northwestern part of Nantong Prefecture.
Plans also exist for a cross-river connection from Nantong to the Shanghai metropolitan area (the Shanghai–Nantong Railway). It will connect to the Nanjing–Qidong Railway at Pingdong Station on the northwestern outskirts of Nantong’s urban core. Construction work is expected to start in 2013.
