The city’s traditional role has been that of a port that connected the interior mountainous region of Southern Zhejiang province to the rest of the country. During the Sino-Japanese war of 1937-1942, Wenzhou port played an important role by virtue of being one of the few Chinese ports that were still under the Chinese control. Though its importance declined during the later years of the war, it again gained prominence in 1955 after the reestablishment of coastal trade along the Zhejiang coast.
