TRACING THE ROOTS
Established in Chongqing city at the initiative of General Liu Xiang in 1929, Chongqing University graduated into a comprehensive academic and research center in 1942. It then consisted of six colleges extending courses in arts, engineering, law, medicine, and science. During the restructuring of higher education across the country in 1952, the institution was restructured as a multi disciplinary university with orientation towards engineering and brought under the jurisdiction of the State Ministry of Education.
The University was one of the first key national seats of higher learning in 1960. Following the opening up of China and the implementation of reforms across the nation, Chongqing University introduced a number of other disciplines including art, business management, humanities, sports education. The introduction and expansion of the academic and research schools, paved the path of this institution to upgrade itself into a national comprehensive University.
The next overhauling took place in 2000 when the University was merged with the Chongqing Jianzhu University (重庆建筑大学 in Chinese) and the Chongqing Architectural College (重庆建筑专科学校 in Chinese) to form the present-day Chongqing University.

Of them, the full-time faculty number around 2700 while fulltime professors as well as associate professors are 1,700. Western China
The term ‘Western China’ refers to the following provinces (in a random order), namely Yunnan, Sichuan, , Shaanxi, Qinghai, Guizhou, and Gansu. It also includes the three autonomous regions (in a random order) of Xinjiang, Tibet, and Ningxia besides the sole municipality of Chongqing.
The nomenclature ‘Western China’ in Chinese is shown as 中国西部; in traditional Chinese, it is scripted as 中國西部; while in Pinyin, it is written as zhōngguó xībù. However, this term should not be confused with the term ‘West China.
In this section, we shall take into cognizance the prominent universities in Western China. We start with the municipality of Chongqing.
Chongqing
The municipality of Chongqing in Western China (not West China’) is a principal urban center in central region of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). It is also one of the main five national central cities of China. This sole municipality in the inland portion of China, Chongqing along with Tianjin, Shanghai, and Beijing, is administratively one of PRC’s four direct-controlled municipalities.
Chongqing, located on the upstream catchment region of the basin of the Yangtze River, has been a principal cultural, commercial and political hub of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), besides being a significant transportation and manufacturing epicenter. The Economist Intelligence Unit in its 2012 survey selected Chongqing among the 13 promising emerging megalopolis or megacity.
Chongqing has a significant history and culture and serves as the economic centre of the upstream Yangtze basin. It is a major manufacturing centre and transportation hub and in a July 2012 report by the Economist Intelligence Unit, was named as one of the 13 emerging megacities, or megalopolises, in China.[11]
NOMENCLATURES
The State Council formally gave its nod to the nomenclature of this Western China urban epicenter as 渝 (Yú) on 18 April 1997. The abbreviated term ‘Yú’ has been chosen after the earlier name of a portion of river Jialing that almost divides the city of Chongqing. This river is a tributary of river Yangtze.
The other nomenclatures of Chongqing municipality are variously written as 重庆 in Chinese; ‘Chóngqìng’ in Pinyin; and earlier romanized as ‘Chungking’.
TRACING THE ROOTS
The Chongqing municipality was established on March 14, 1997. It was set up in the city of the same name that was a sub-provincial city within the jurisdiction of the Province of Sichuan. The greater Chongqing area constitutes the largest directly controlled municipality of PRC. It is made up of 15 counties; four counties that are autonomous; and 19 districts.
As per the municipality records of 28 April, 2011, the population of the Chongqing area in Western China was 28,846,170. Of them, just seven million inhabited the commercial hub. Thus, the altogether population of the greater Chongqing region is approximately 34.000.000.
Even during the time of the ROC (Republic of China), Chongqing was a municipality and also the capital of the Republic during the nine years Second Sino-Japanese War from 1937 to 1945.
