13,000 students in Xiamen to sit for the 2016 national college entrance exam

A total of 13,000 students will take part in this year’s national college entrance exam, or “gaokao”, on June 7th and 8th in Xiamen.

19 schools in Xiamen will be used for the examination. Of which, the Xiamen No.1 High School will hold up to the largest number of gaokao participants.

A total of 9.40 million Chinese students will sit for the 2016 national college entrance exam, according to statistics from the ministry. Emergency measures will be rolled out to deal with earthquakes, torrential rain, floods and disease outbreaks that could occur during the exams.

A robot will attend next year’s gaokao and aspires to get an offer from one of China’s top universities in 2017, West China Metropolis Daily reports. The robot will include three independent artificial intelligence modules that will handle maths, Chinese language and comprehensive liberal arts exams.

China’s national college entrance exam

The National College Entrance Examination, commonly known as Gaokao (Chinese:高考), is an academic testing event held every summer in China’s mainland and joined by millions of participants, a majority of whom are high-school students.

The Gaokao is an important exam for those who accomplished high-school education and are applying to universities, colleges and other higher educational institutions.Before 1949, colleges in China were entitled to schedule their own tests for school enrollment. In other words, a candidate could sit several entrance exams for different schools as long as he or she had enough time and energy. Now, the majority of China’s schools hold the Gaokao exam only once a year, usually from June 7-9, though it was held July 7-9 prior to 2003.

The entrance exam has been a stepping-stone for candidates applying for university admissions since 1978, when the country resumed the exam system after 10 years of educational turmoil during the Cultural Revolution. Since then, college enrollment has risen year after year due to the expansion of the education system. However, in recent years, with declining birth rates and increased applications to overseas universities, the Gaokao is gradually losing its supreme significance as a gateway to higher education.
